Zendaya's Best Actress Push for Dune 3 Is a Bold, Risky Bet

Moving Chani from supporting to lead tests how far Oscar strategy can stretch a category, and it could leave Zendaya with the harshest comparison of her career.

Is a category just a label, or is it a promise to voters? Zendaya's reported Best Actress campaign for Dune: Part Three forces that question, and the answer matters more than the usual awards-season chatter.

Here is what we know. Multiple sources told Variety that she will campaign in lead actress for Chani in the final chapter of Denis Villeneuve's saga. In the first two films she was positioned in supporting. Variety also reports she will go lead for A24's The Drama and supporting for The Odyssey. The film opens December 18, and no one outside the production has seen it.

A category is an argument, and this one has to be won on screen

Campaigning is a pitch. You tell voters: this performance carries the movie. Moving Chani up is a bold version of that pitch, and it depends entirely on a film nobody has judged. If Dune: Part Three really puts Chani at its center, the move looks like honesty. If it doesn't, voters will notice the gap between the billing and the screen time. Nothing sinks a campaign faster than a performance that feels smaller than the category it was sold in.

There is evidence for the optimistic reading. As IGN notes, Variety attributes the shift to Chani's expanded role, and IGN's Jesse Schedeen argues that what we've seen suggests a vastly different Chani from the book's, one who has rejected Paul. That is a character with her own arc, not an accessory to someone else's tragedy. In our view, that is the strongest card the campaign holds.

The odds are bad, and the timing makes them worse

Let's be sober about it. Gizmodo points out that the previous two Dune films landed Best Picture and technical nominations. IGN adds that no actor from either film earned an Oscar or Golden Globe nomination. Sci-fi is a hard genre for acting voters, and a December release leaves little time to build a groundswell. Gold Derby, according to IGN, doesn't currently list her as a hopeful in either actress category for any of her films.

The field matters too. World of Reel calls Best Actress already crowded, and we agree that a lead slot is a harder room to win than supporting. This is the real gamble. In supporting, a strong, memorable stretch of screen time can be enough. In lead, a performance is measured against whole films built around a single woman.

The smart read: this is a career campaign wearing a Dune costume

Our interpretation, and it is only that, is that the category choice is as much about Zendaya as about Chani. She is 30, with two Emmys and a Golden Globe, and she has never had an Oscar nomination. Her year has been enormous: The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day are described as the two highest-grossing films of 2026. Spreading her bets across three films and three category decisions looks like a studio-and-publicist plan to make sure that, somewhere, a voter's eye lands on her.

That is not cynical in itself. Every campaign is strategic. What worries us is the cost if it backfires. If Chani earns her weight on screen and still misses, the story is "sci-fi snub, again." If the role proves lighter than the pitch, the story becomes "overreach," and that label sticks to a performance that may have deserved better.

Our verdict

We would not call the move foolish; we'd call it honest only if the film backs it up. Warner Bros. has press screenings noted for late November, and that will be the real test. If critics describe a Chani who drives the third act, lead is the right call and the category risk becomes a story of ambition. If the reaction is "great, but supporting-sized," the studio should be ready to pivot quickly instead of defending a label.

Our advice to readers: don't judge the campaign by the headline. Wait for the film. A category can bend, but a performance has to fill it.
